  • eMule-project.net - eMule is a reliable, ad free, peer-to-peer file sharing client. Open source. Efficient network. eD2K and KAD network support. Linux version, LMule is available: lmule.sourceforge.net. To use P2P network legally you must have a permission of the copyright holder to share or to download any files. If you are the creator of a digital work, then all rights belong to you, and you may do whatever you wish with it, sell it or give it for free to others, whichever you find better. You may sing or play some jumbo drum, record this to Mp3 or Ogg audio format and share with everyone at no cost. It's much cheaper than signing a contract with a Recording Company :) A great thing indeed. Check out Creative Commons. To use P2P network you must have DSL Flatrate or Flatrate ISDN connection, because eMule works best at nights when you sleep - it's required to leave it running all the time. It is not suitable for Dialup or Pay-Per-Minute contracts win Internet Service Providers: ISP. You may upgrade your contract to Flat rate by calling your Internet Service Provider: AOL, SBC Yahoo-DSL, etc... It costs about $15-$20 more, but it's worth it. 3.0 Mbps is the best. Make sure you compare available connection plans thoroughly, some providers hide the upload limit or provide very limited upcoming traffic. The upload speed is very important for this network.

  • BetaNews.com - Alpha and Beta News, Inside Information and Unreleased Products. A great quantity of softwares that are still undergoing heavy development. Generally these softwares are available for free to everyone to download, even if the release will be available as a boxed CD-ROM or DVD-ROM distribution only. • RarLab.com or Win-Rar.com - WinRAR archiver, a powerful tool to process RAR and ZIP files. WinRAR provides the full RAR and ZIP file support, can decompress CAB, ARJ, LZH, ACE, TAR, GZip, UUE, ISO, BZIP2, Z and 7-Zip and other archive formats. RAR compresses up to 15 percent better than ZIP. Windows XP users will also not get annoyed by the default file manager when there are hundreds of rar archives in a single folder or if there is a rar archive on a floppy disk. The default Windows XP integrated zip compressor always tries to run ahead of you and that only causes 10-15 second hangups for harddrives and from 3 to 20 minute hangups for floppy disks. WinRAR is not free, it is shareware, meaning you have the chance to thoroughly test it for 40 days. WinRAR is worth the time. Distribution is available for Windows, Pocket PC, Linux, MacOS X, FreeBSD, DOS and OS/2.

  • Opera.com - The alternative browser to all other browsers. Opera removes banner advertising and licensing free. Opera is probably the tiniest fully functional browser. It includes many features such as automatic pop-up blocking, tabbed browsing and search functions. In addition there is an e-mail program, RSS news feeds and IRC chat. The look and feel of the Opera browser can be customized with a few clicks of the mouse. Opera is available for Linux, Windows, Solaris, FreeBSD, and Mobile. The mobile version is not free. The security expert Bruce Schneider, author of "Applied Cryptography", called Opera a great, powerful browser, and which needs no alternative.

  • Simtel.Net - Probably the oldest archive of Freeware and Shareware. Once being adfree and mostly FTP operated from global servers, now it's full of advertisement, sometimes it's even hard to say about what, several popups (for Internet Explorer) and other stuff, however it still remains a large archive containing a few very rare and very hard to find softwares even for MS-DOS, Windows 3.1 and Handhelds. Simtel.Net updates software titles frequently and has most popular and new releases list on the main page.

  • Tucows.com - Huge archive for Shareware, Freeware and Commercial Software for Windows, Macintosh, Linux, Mobile and PDA. Security, Internet, Development & Web Authoring, File Management, Network Administration and Protocols: IS/IT, Cool Games, Business Software, Audio and Video Soft, Button Creators, Screensaves and Wallpapers, Home and Education utilities. This site has mirrors all around the world, and very strict cow measuring system. Only softwares that the editor finds perfect and standardised and with documentation that is generally nicer than the product itself, get 5 cows. You'd think that 1 cow per man is more than enough, however this site generously gives all other softwares 3 cows, except for the specific software products that are designed for developers, this includes Sun's Java and other development softwares - these titles written by the licensed software engineers never get 5 cows. However other softwares may amazingly get 5 cows, for example a file comparing utility :)

  • Download.com - Another huge archive of various software products, Games, Music: really free Mp3 files with no nags, and without requirement to download any P2P software - we haven't tried yet, but it looks like anyone with little effort can sing and submit their songs and music to Download.com for everyone else to download and listen :) In addition: Audio, CD and DVD Utilities, free P2P software, Antispyware and Antivirus software. The freeware and shareware software titles published on download.com may be a bit outdated because it generally takes about 2 months for this website to update free listings. If there is a choice download from the author's website, to avoid staying with the outdated version. Generally commercial and paid submissions are processed very fast and get maximum exposure and download counts. Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition got over 1,147,138 downloads. Visitors may leave comments about software products and read comments of other users, to comment a registration with Download.com may be required. This site requires all software to be spyware and adware free, but the site itself holds a few advertisements and there are sponsored listings on top of the search results. Among other things, Download.com has several interesting articles and quite valuable Special Collection of advices: Before disaster strikes, A Complete Newbie.
Download.com software library does not accept Alpha, Beta, or other prerelease software versions, unless there is an explicit editorial exception, like for WinZip beta. If you are afraid of bugs, stay with Download.com But if you are a kind of person who wants to know what's coming up there and what tomorrow may bring, we recommend BetaNews as an alternative :)

  • Winsite.com - This archive is also huge enough and has mirrors around the world. The software library includes software for making Audio CD, creating backups, converting WMA, arcade games: Lines, Blocks, Pac Bomber, and antispam utilities. This site has many advertisements just like Simtel.Net, there are popups for Internet Explorer, description text underlined by doted red lines (called "real TEXT ads") and other annoyances, sometimes you have to wait before the download actually starts, apart from excessive advertising the content is worth looking at.

  • ZipLib Free Downloads - ZipLib software library. Huge collection of different softwares and utilities. Presents both freeware, shareware and trialware products. However, this library is unsorted and it doesn't provide any convenient ways to navigate around, but in case you are just looking for something you are not sure what, than this pile may be just what you need.

Free Photocamera Utilities, Free Photo Editing Software, Free Toolbars and Browsers. Cheap and effective advertising for your website.

  • - Picasa software allows you to find, edit and share your pictures with your friends instantly.

  • - The alternative browser to Internet Explorer. IE is integrated in all recent versions of Windows 98 and Windows XP. Long before that, in the times of DOS and Windows 3.1 Netscape or Mozzila foundation was the leading browser producer for the world. Now the times have changed, Microsoft made a free browser and Netscape had to follow. Now we may enjoy the free quality product called Netscape/Firefox. It's hard to say what is the difference between Netscape and Firefox, probably it's the interface changes, but the engine is the same. USA Today and FORBES claim that Firefox browser is more secure and reliable than Internet Explorer. Firefox has built-in PopUp blocker that brocks out many popups, for the Internet Explorer you have to download MSN messenger or use some other free or paid PopUp blocker to avoid annoying ads.

  • - Google Ads Technology, text adds that look just like regular links but may have "Ads by Goooooogle" note on top of them. There are several types of Google Ads (AdSence) and sometimes sites that have about 5 million visitors a day may remove the Google note on top the advertising. Among all other ads, Google ads are most bearable and sometimes even informative. Google requires that those sites that order ads be popup free and esthetic, and Google has very strict policy if to allow a specific ad or not. However Google does not check the sites that show ads, this often causes abuse of the whole system - site owners run for profits and mislead everyone, good news is that we can control where our ads will appear and where not. It's quite easy and relatively cheap to order advertising campaign on Google websearch and all related affiliate websites, it just required to have an AdWords account and $5. Definitely Google's way of advertising has many advantages over popup and banner advertising.
